Description

Entrance & Barrier MattingSKU Rmco-C17-100100-NA

The traditional mat-well matting that still does the job better than most modern alternatives. A dense 17 mm pile of 100% natural coconut fibre works like a stiff brush on every sole that crosses it, scraping off grit and mud and soaking up rain before it reaches your floor. Bonded to a heavy-duty anti-slip PVC backing, it sits flat, stays put and keeps dirt and water in the mat rather than in the well beneath it.

17 mmcut pile height
1 m or 2 mroll widths, cut to length
3colours: Natural, Black, Grey

Buy exactly the length you need by the metre, or a full 6 m roll for larger entrances and multiple doors. Trim it to shape on site with a sharp knife for a precise fit in any recess. Made for public entrances, receptions and porches in pubs, hotels, schools, churches, shops and period properties.

Why coir still beats most synthetic entrance mats

Scrapes like a brush, not a sponge
Coarse, upright coconut fibres flex and spring back under foot, dragging dried mud, grit and leaf litter off soles. Synthetic pile mats wipe; coir actively cleans.
Built for the standard mat well
At 17 mm overall height it sits flush in the typical recess found in shops, schools and older buildings, so there is no lip to trip on and doors swing clear.
Heavy-duty anti-slip PVC backing
The solid vinyl base keeps the matting flat and still with minimum movement, and stops water and dirt migrating through to the well or floor beneath.
Pay for the length you need
Choose a 1 m or 2 m wide roll and order by the metre, or take a full 6 m roll for the best price per square metre on bigger jobs. Trim the width on site for an exact fit.
Three colours to suit the building
Classic Natural for traditional and period entrances, Black or Grey for modern lobbies and darker floors where a lighter mat would show every mark.
Natural, renewable and hard wearing
Coconut husk fibre is a by-product of the coconut harvest and has been used for entrance matting for over a century because it simply lasts. Rated for -20°C to +60°C.

Where it works best

  • Recessed mat wells in shops and showrooms
  • Pub, restaurant and hotel entrances
  • School, college and nursery doors
  • Church, village hall and club entrances
  • Office and reception lobbies
  • Period and listed properties
  • Porches and enclosed front entrances
  • Blank base for a printed logo mat

Choosing the right size

Size Weight Best for
1 m wide x 1 m 6 kg Single doors and small porch wells
1 m wide x 2 m 12 kg Deeper single-door wells, two strides of scraping
1 m wide x 3 m 18 kg Long narrow lobbies, corridors and runners
1 m wide x 6 m full roll 36 kg Several doors, or the best value for a 1 m wide well over 3 m
2 m wide x 1 m 12 kg Double doors with a shallow well
2 m wide x 2 m 24 kg Double doors and shop fronts. Our most popular cut.
2 m wide x 3 m 36 kg Wide lobbies and busy public entrances
2 m wide x 6 m full roll 72 kg Large foyers, multi-door sites and contractors

Rule of thumb: measure the well at several points, order the next full metre up, and trim on site. Grey matting weighs slightly more at about 6.5 kg per metre at 1 m wide and 13.1 kg per metre at 2 m wide. If your well is longer than 3 m, a full 6 m roll costs less than a cut length.

Cleaning and care

A natural product that only needs a few minutes a week
  1. Vacuum regularly with a plain suction head to lift grit out of the pile. Avoid rotating brush bars, which pull at the fibres.
  2. Expect some loose fibres in the first few weeks. This is excess from the bonding process, not wear, and it settles down after the bedding-in period.
  3. Lift the mat out of the well now and then and shake or beat it to clear trapped dirt from the base.
  4. For a deep clean, rinse with cold water, a hose or a pressure washer. Do not use hot water, bleach or strong detergents.
  5. Dry fully, pile side up, before refitting so the backing and the well stay dry.

Frequently asked questions

Will 17 mm fit my mat well?
17 mm is the most common recess depth in UK commercial and period buildings. Measure the depth of your well at a few points. If the well is deeper, our 23 mm coir matting fills it; if it is shallower, pick a low-profile rubber-backed mat instead.
Can I cut it to shape myself?
Yes. Lay the matting pile side down, mark the backing and cut through the PVC with a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. Allow about 5 mm clearance all round so it drops into the well without buckling.
Is it sold by the metre or only in rolls?
Both. Choose a 1 m, 2 m or 3 m cut length in either 1 m or 2 m width, or a full 6 m roll. For runs over 3 m the full roll works out cheaper than a cut length.
Does coir shed?
New coir drops loose fibres left over from manufacturing for the first few weeks. Vacuum a little more often at the start and it stops. It is normal for a natural product and is not a fault.
Can it be used outside or in an open porch?
It is designed for indoor use. A covered, enclosed porch is fine, but constant rain and sun will shorten the life of any coir matting. Outside the door, use a rubber scraper mat and let the coir work inside.
Will the colour vary?
Coir is made from coconut husks, so the natural shade and texture vary slightly from batch to batch. Black and Grey are dyed and more consistent, but the same natural variation applies. Order the full quantity for one entrance in one go.
Can wheelchairs and trolleys cross it?
When it is fitted flush in a mat well, yes. Loose laid on top of a floor the 17 mm edge is a step up, so for surface-laid use at an accessible entrance we recommend a thinner rubber-bordered mat.
Can I have my logo printed on it?
Yes. Coir takes a printed design well and is the classic base for a traditional logo mat. Call us with your artwork and sizes for a quote.
How does it compare with your Super Absorbent Waffle Entrance Mat?
Coir is the better scraper and the right choice for a recessed well and a traditional look. The Super Absorbent Waffle mat is a surface-laid mat with a rubber border that holds far more water, around 6 litres per square metre, and is only 9 mm thick, so it suits wet, busy doorways with no well and tight door clearance. Many sites use both: coir in the well, waffle mat just inside.
