Options shown are for the thickness you've selected. Strips are cut from one continuous order; joins run along the length.
Description
High voltage switchroom matting to IEC 61111:2009 in Class 1 to Class 4, for maximum working voltages from 7,500V up to 36,000V. Choose the class to suit your system: Class 2 is the usual choice for 11kV switchgear and Class 4 for 33kV. Every grade is proof and withstand tested to the standard, with mechanical puncture, slip, flame and low-temperature tests on top, and colour-coded class marking repeats along the underside every metre so any length can be identified at inspection.
Which class do I need?
| Class | Max working voltage | Typical UK system | Proof / withstand test | Thickness and widths |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | 7,500 V | 3.3kV and 6.6kV plant | 10 kV / 20 kV | 3 mm, 1 m wide |
| Class 2 | 17,000 V | 11kV switchgear | 20 kV / 30 kV | 4 mm, 1 m or 1.2 m wide |
| Class 3 | 26,500 V | 22kV systems | 30 kV / 40 kV | 4.5 mm, 1 m wide |
| Class 4 | 36,000 V | 33kV substations | 40 kV / 50 kV | 5 mm, 1 m wide |
Choose a class whose maximum working voltage is at or above the highest voltage in the work area. If you are not sure, call us before you order and we will help you pick the right grade.
Why choose this matting
Current standard
IEC 61111 replaced BS 921 and covers voltage, mechanical puncture, slip, flame and cold-weather performance, so it is the grade to specify for high voltage switchrooms and audits.
One page, every class
Class 1 to Class 4 side by side, so you can match the matting to 3.3kV, 6.6kV, 11kV, 22kV or 33kV equipment.
Marked every metre
Class marking runs along the underside at one-metre spacing in the IEC colour code: white for Class 1, yellow for Class 2, green for Class 3 and orange for Class 4.
Cut to length
Sold per linear metre from 1m up to a full 10m roll, so the full length in front of the switchgear can be covered in one piece.
Ideal for
- 11kV switchrooms
- 33kV substations
- Ring main units
- HV motor and plant rooms
- Hospital and data centre intakes
- Wind and solar farm substations
- Rail and utility switchgear

Fitting & care
- Lay the matting along the full working area in front of the switchgear, so the operator never stands off the mat.
- Use one continuous length where you can; avoid gaps or overlaps at joins.
- Keep the surface clean and dry, and wipe with mild soapy water. Do not use solvents or oils.
- Inspect before use for cuts, holes, embedded metal or damage, and replace any damaged section straight away.
FAQs
Which class do I need for 11kV?
Class 2, rated to 17,000V working, is the usual choice for 11kV switchgear. For 33kV choose Class 4. Always pick a class at or above the highest voltage in the work area, and call us if you are unsure.
What about low voltage panels?
For switchboards up to 1,000V, our Class 0 matting to IEC 61111 is the right grade and costs less.
Can I get a test certificate?
Call us before you order if you need a test certificate for your records and we will arrange it with your order.
How is the price worked out?
The price is per linear metre. Choose your class and width, then set the quantity to the number of metres you need, up to a full 10m roll.
Is matting enough on its own?
No. Insulating matting is one layer of protection. High voltage work must follow your safety rules, with authorised persons, isolation, permits and the right PPE.
